- Established in 1983 A group of 17 interested persons met Tuesday, October 11, 1983 for the purpose of organizing an Iris Association.
Stimulate and foster interest in horticulture pursuits, conservation and protection of the genus Iris
- Purpose: The purposes of the Southern Kentucky Iris Society, (SKIS) is to develop the science of horticulture and any activities related to the study, propagation and culture of the genus Iris; to stimulate and foster interest in horticulture pursuits, conservation and protection of these plants; to cooperate with other organizations, public and private, in scientific and horticultural education of all those interested in learning any phase of the genus Iris. SKIS is dedicated to encouragement and support of scientific research, including those pertaining to the solution of diseases and investigation and conservation of the genus in the wild, collection, compilation and publication of data concerning the genus Iris,; and education of the public through exhibitions, public display gardens and local meetings open to the public.
